Leslie Emery discovered a love and strong connection to her Jewish roots through her participation at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, chanting Torah and davening for groups of people who truly appreciated her singing. Leslie’s mother is Jewish and her father is not; throughout her participation in Jewish community life, she was faced with negative language such as “Intermarriage Problem.” The irony that this type of language followed rounds of appreciation for her participation never escaped her. At meetings and in the community she has become an advocate for a more cooperative Jewish community with room for all.
