Dirty Little Secret: Addiction in the Jewish Community

Growing up in Winnipeg’s Jewish community, addiction was not something we heard much about. We wanted to believe we’d all become doctors and lawyers, certainly never drunks and junkies. Not us. Not me…well- loved, well-educated and well-mannered. Realizing that the disease of addiction did not discriminate based on neighbourhood, faith or family was crushing. Mine is a story of shame, loneliness, growth and recovery. Join me as I discuss the need for dialogue around the “A word” in Jewish homes, schools, and circles, the demand for resources and the “dirty little secret” that hurts our community to keep.
